About The Hire Hub

The Hire Hub was created in the 6 months up to March 2007 by a small but dedicated team of business people, web developers, designers, and marketeers. It is wholly owned, funded and operated by Systanet Limited, a computer services and innovations company founded by Tim Gibbs in 1999, after 20 years of working in bespoke systems development and consultancy.

Gibbs, 43, came up with the concept of The Hire Hub whilst working on his all-aluminium homebuild aeroplane. He needed a specialist tool to make a few military standard electrical connections to avionics equipment. The dedicated crimper tool was several hundred pounds to purchase and needed to be shipped from the United States - clearly not good value for about a dozen connections. It was simply not available to hire. He then realised that he already had tools that only other aircraft builders might find useful if only there were a medium to enable them. The idea rapidly spread to cover all vertical markets when he realised that we all have stuff we own but rarely use. The re-use of items, rather than new manufacture, also had great environmental appeal to Gibbs.

It seemed the idea had many parallels to the ebay model of consumer-to-consumer trade, and despite its popularity there was nothing similar in the rental world. It also seemed that the natural objection of "how do I know I'll get my stuff back" was no different from the "how do I know I'll get my purchase" in the ebay world - yet we all readily trade online. Mechanisms built into The Hire Hub also help build trust amongst users. Dialogues with friend, ex-colleagues, and business partners all confirmed the concept as solid and exciting - and so The Hire Hub was born.

In the last few days several companies have come forward keen to partner with The Hire Hub to offer rental items or the services that go around them such as escrow, insurance, legal, etc.

Maybe a new industry has been born!
